For the last year I have been thinking about what quilts I still really want to make. You know, those "BUCKET LIST" quilts you really want to make while you can.
My thought process is to make that LIST. Then pull the FABRICS for each quilt. That should make it easier for me to let go of so much "extra" fabric I have no plan for and can't live long enough to use. That's the theory, anyway...
Why should I let go of fabric? Because there is just too much! My 3 closets, so full:
So for the next few weeks I will show you one of the quilts that has made my BUCKET LIST. In no particular order here is #1
HAWAII SUNSET 1845: Quilters Newsletter Magazine Feb/Mar 2010.
Saved this magazine for 14 years |
Yardage I have on hand that works--I have many fat quarters in these colors to supplement this group |
The ONE RULE I have set for myself for these BUCKET LIST QUILTS is I will BUY NO MORE FABRIC TO MAKE THEM. I will use what I have.
There is only one fabric in this quilt that requires a sizeable amount--the Navy Blue sashing. I have enough of one, it's a bit lighter than the one used in the magazine. I have enough of two other darker Navy Blues, if I am willing to use one for the body of the quilt and one for the perimeter triangles. Time will tell which I decide to use.
This resembles Western Sun I made a couple years ago but the fabric selection is very different and the Nine Patch centers will be much faster to make than these Star blocks:

Do you have a Bucket List Quilt?
Let's quilt.

Oh, I too have kept this magazine for the Hawaii Sunset quilt! I don’t know it’s never occurred to me to start pulling fabrics for it but you’ve inspired me to do so. I notice your pull has a small bit of yellow. Are you planning to use less than the pattern?
ReplyDeleteThere is a good bit of yellow in that roll wrapped in red. Yellow is a color I don’t use a lot but this quilt will have plenty.
DeleteAfter attending the Wisconsin Quilt Show this year, I decided to try the 1876 Centennial Quilt and use my stash. I don't have 3 closets of fabric but I do have about 4 big bins -- lol -- hope to use most of it but I have to admit, I've already bought more (its hopeless). It will be the most challenging quilt I've ever done!
DeleteJo ofJo’s Country Junction made this quilt and it is waiting for her to quilt it. Dotti in CT
ReplyDeleteI would love to make one of Sue Garman's quilts. Halo Medallion, Washington medallion or Stars for a New Day.
ReplyDeleteI have made all of them, each is wonderful. Pick one and get started.
DeleteI have my Western Sun on my list to finish this winter! I have been thinking about bucket list quilts too! Then, you got me started on Two-in-One, lol! I have already decided I am making a second one.I do love the idea of pulling fabrics. 💕
ReplyDeleteI’ve known a couple of the Patchwork Divas members for years and have loved everything they make! This is no exception and I definitely wish I had the pattern. Any idea on how to get it since the magazine is long out of print?
ReplyDeleteI agree about the 19th century Patchwork Divas. I just checked both books of their quilts, this one is not in either. If you know any of them, you could ask if they would be willing to provide the pattern.
DeleteThanks! Making my list and pulling my fabrics!
ReplyDeleteI want to make the Tula Pink butterfly quilt. But, I am in a cycle of making baby quilts!
ReplyDeleteI too have been trying to only use fabric on hand. I will be anxious to see your quilt done. The Halo Medallion is on my list also, but we’ll see.
ReplyDeleteMy current bucket list is my UFO list. I am trying to stick to it but occasionally, I pull out something from my stash to make. Thanks for sharing your closets. We probably have the same amount of fabric. I will be leaving instructions to my kids on how to handle it all. LOL Fabric acquisitions are personal. They are like my children. I cherish them all.
