STUDENT WORK

I am always delighted to see Student Work. Sometimes I get photos by email, sometimes finished projects are brought to class and sometimes I see them hanging in quilt shows.

These quilts were all on display at the recent Heritage Quilters of Huntsville Show: 

FULL CIRCLE is a Wendy Williams pattern that requires many class hours to teach. Three years ago I taught it locally as a 5 day Seminar Workshop--Ben and Lisa were both in that class. I love their work.

I am happy to announce I will be teaching this one more time at Empty Spools Seminars February 28-March 5, 2027. Registration opens in June 2026 and if last time is any measure, it will fill quickly. It is the perfect 5 day class, filled with so much to learn. Here is my version:

FIVE EASY PIECES, by Susie F.

My most recent class was CHARMING SAMPLER at Southern Charm Quilting here in Huntsville. Six hours of sewing little 3" blocks provides the opportunity to learn a lot of techniques in just one day. All 19 Students did great and most were tired at the end of the day. A few of them were true beginners:

Lori Q did a super job with her bright fabrics--she learned to like little blocks!

I will end with these: MY FAVORIITE THINGS, my original pattern design using some of my favorite blocks. This was a 6 month, LECTURE/DEMO class: we met for two hours once a month, I demonstrated the sewing for that month's work, students brought the previous month's work, and each person made their own version. Students gave each other ideas for fabric/color choices, I showed how to improve all their piecing, it is a great class--I loved teaching it. All their sewing was done in the comfort of their own home.  

Learn how to combine blocks, with sashing/spacers, create different borders, and you can make any pattern your own. I may offer this again locally in 2027. It can't be taught in one 6 hour class as most guilds hire me to do, there is too much to learn. Meeting as a group over several months has the added bonus of creating new friendships too.

2026 is about full and I am being careful not to overbook 2027. That will allow more time to teach locally. So, if you want me to come to your guild, now is the time to reach out and let's get it on the schedule.

DISAPPEARING PATCHWORK

 Recently I taught a great class locally: DISAPPEARING PATCHWORK at Patches & Stitches:

I made it to challenge myself to make a neutral quilt, well outside my usual comfort zone of brights or deeply saturated colors. 

Class went very well and it is an excellent 6 hour class I am pleased to offer to guilds and shops.

Take a look at the students progress. I was very pleased to see a few students chose to not use neutrals. I was sure this was a good design for any kind of fabric choices; it does help to see it in other fabrics.

Evelyn got away before the group photo but I caught her before she left. She says this was a great "stash buster" as she needs to make a quilt for a tall man and it has to be done soon: 

Melody chose a darker neutral palette and her blocks are coming along. She has a charm pack that was a great addition to the yardage she had: 

Anna a used Tim Holtz map and text fabrics for a very LOW VOLUME quilt. She wants to find a few more of his fabrics to round out her blocks. I love how soft and soothing this is:

These blocks were made by Joan and Evelyn, strangers when class began but kindred spirits. They used several of the same fabrics and their blocks are perfect together:

Playing around I put Anna's lovely soft blocks in the middle and surrounded them with Melody and Patricia's blocks:

Glinda is making a Mardi Gras quilt with several fabrics given to her by a Louisiana friend. Nothing neutral or low volume about this, it's beautiful:

Fortunately, I got a group shot minus Evelyn. Joan on the left had a wonderful day--this was her first class ever, though not her first quilt:

I do love to teach. And it was good to know this makes a fun and educational 6 hour class. Several of the students even learned they put their rotary cutters back incorrectly, which explained why they found accurate cutting a challenge. In almost every class, I reassemble a cutter or two.

Students Color My World Quilts

 Recently, the year-long class I did locally for Color My World wrapped up. Two hours a month, lecture/demo to teach the steps for that month's pattern, and all sewing was done at home. Students LOVE this format for long-term projects.

See what they created:

Sally used a beautiful dark navy backgroumd

Paula used garment silks from 40 years of sewing--and it's done

Evelyn used Cherrywood solids and used all the scraps for a pieced inner border. The Tim Holtz map fabric is perfect for the outer border

Evelyn's husband worked for Morgan Stanley--he lost friends in the 2001 World Trade Center attack. Her World Trade Center building is falling apart

Pam wanted a happy quilt so she used a sunny sky. She said she learned a lot from this quilt and "Finished is Better than Perfect"

Mary Louise used the alternative Kit and will add one final border. Her Little Houses in the City represent Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter

Cyndi designed Skyscrapers--the Seattle Space Needle, a future Shuttle ready for launch, the Eiffel Tower and Big Ben

Several students are still working on theirs. This is a long, detailed project. 

Most of these women are signed up for another adventure for 2022--Garden Party Down Under--the 2022 BOM designed exclusively for The Quilt Show by Australian designer Irene Blanck. This class will meet every other month beginning in January 2022 at Sweet Home Quilting in Madison, AL. There are a few spaces left. Having a deadline helps keep people on target and learning tips and tricks in person is priceless!
