To prepare for future class proposals I made a few new Class Samples using different styles of fabrics from the primary sample.
I find people can't often picture a project made in very different fabrics from the published sample.
Here you can see how different a quilt can look when you change colors/fabrics.
WESTERN SUN:
1800's Reproduction Fabrics, 110" square |
Bright Contemporary Fabrics, 40" square |
Old timey Fabrics, 33" square Kaffe Charming, 29" x 33"
DISAPPEARING PATCHWORK:
Bright Sample Block Neutral Quilt, 62" square
ANTIQUE ROSE STAR:
1800's Reproduction Fabrics, 66" x 74" Student work, Bright Contemporary Fabrics
HEXAGON DIAMOND STARS:
Bright Contemporary Fabrics, 13" x 14" 1800's Reproduction Fabrics, 39" x 41"
FEATHERED STARS:
Holly R's finished quilt, Contemporary fabrics |
Mine in progress, Old Timey feeling fabrics |
Pam R's finished quilt, Fussy Cut centers of William Morris fabrics |
If you see a quilt you like but don't love the colors or fabric choices, consider making a "test block" with different fabrics. Good design is good design, it just takes the right fabrics to make a quilt one you will love.
Let's quilt.

I used to work in a quilt shop. I was always amazed at how many quilters came in looking for the same colors as used on a pattern. That's one of my favorite things to do -- make a quilt in a different colorway. Your "new" quilts look great and ought to help those that don't want to change things up.
ReplyDeleteI love the examples you've given, I've also realised that I'm definitely in the repro camp for fabrics - most of the time anyway. I particularly like the charming sampler, I'm currently working on a hand pieced sunflower quilt in a similar colourway to the first western sun - in repro fabrics with the occasional bright surprise to lift it. Thanks for all the inspiration you provide and your flawless instructions for Quilt Show BOM's, all the best for 2025, Elaine in UK
ReplyDeleteThank you, Elaine, lovely to hear from you with those kind words.
